Caps For A Cure is a project that was started to honor my grandpa Richard who fought cancer and won and also in memory of my Grandma Pat who lost her battle with cancer less than two weeks after diagnosis.  Caps are being knitted for kids with cancer so that they will feel cared about and money is also raised for The American Cancer Society to help find a cure for cancer.

Caps for a CureWhen I turned 12, in December 2008, it was time for me to think of a special project to do as part of my Bat-Mitzvah.

My parents own a preschool and in 2008, a little four year old boy named Jake lost his mom to Cancer. His grandma would spend her spare time knitting hats for people with cancer. She showed my mom and I how to make the hats, and that is where it all began.

Caps for a CureWe started making caps for kids with cancer. What started as a small project quickly took on a life of its own. As friends and family members started to see my progress, they thought it was a great idea and they too began making caps. My grandma Reva went crazy knitting cap after cap until her fingers were sore.

I however had a different purpose in mind. In 2005, doctors found out that my Grandpa Richard's sore throat was really stage 4 cancer, which is the last stage. Doctors doubted his chance for survival.
He endured a year of weekly chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation. Through his wonderful doctors and positive attitude, he is cancer free today.

Caps for a CureMore recently in August of 2009, we found out my Grandma Pat was diagnosed with cancer. She however was not as fortunate as Grandpa Richard. She died less than two weeks after diagnosis. I knit these caps for kids with cancer in honor of Grandpa Richard and in memory of Grandma Pat.

Caps for a CureTo make an even bigger impact and to give others a chance to help someone else, we launched a website; www.capsforacure.org.

Not only will the caps go to kids with cancer, but individuals can make a donation to cancer research and their name will be placed on a tag inside a cap. That way, kids with cancer will not only feel cared about when they wear the cap, but they will be hopeful knowing that money has been raised to find a cure for cancer.
